Great staff, noisy at night, a lot of young-ones
This is a great hostel in a great location. The staff are excellent - always willing to help. My two qwams with the hostel were a. its really difficult to sleep at night given the floorboards and the creeking, etc. and b. the bathrooms constantly smelt like urine. Besides this it is excellent, probably more for the younger traveller looking to party. Definately recommend this hotel if thats your thing.
great for students, and hostel lovers, just not princesses like myself!
I was glad that this was my first hostel, very clean, comfortable, and charming, free internet, bar, restaurant, great staff. Unfortunately this stay made me realize, "I can't do this"! I'm just not a hostel kind of girl. The bathrooms are very cramped. There is no AC, which is common over there, but was VERY hard to sleep since it was so humid and sticky sleeping in a room with 12 other people.
Inexpensive and Clean
I almost always stayed there when I went on weekend trips to London. The rooms are clean, quiet, and the upper beds have a rail to stop you from falling down, which is critical for me, because otherwise I would fall off the bed in the middle my sleep. The rooms are large, with storage places. The breakfast was good because each person got to have a free croissant...and most hostels only give cereal in London. The location is a tiny bit sketchy at night, if you walk alone from the subway. But totally fine during the day. The bathroom tap is a little weird, but managable. I recommended it to a friend and he loved the place so much!
Great for London!
My brother and I stayed at Palmer's Lodge for 3 nights in October of 2008.
The building was a beautiful old manor house with loads of character. The front desk girls were wonderful -- full of great advice and directions, the free internet was fantastic for two laptop free travelers, and the breakfast was very appreciated.
Our room was "twin with ensuite". Basically we had a tiny room with bunkbeds (I felt like I was at summer camp) and a tiny bathroom with a shower. Our room was on ground level, and for some reason the staff who took care of our room always opened the window during the day when we weren't there. I didn't like this too much, since all of our luggage was in the room, and anyone could have easily gained access to our room through the large open window. The room was not sound proff at all. We had a room full of girls next door, and could easily hear their entire conversations. We realized after the first night, that there was a gap in the wall between the wall and the window about a 2 inches wide. I think they literally put up a wall to cut a room in half, and didn't measure the new wall properly. We stuffed towels in the gap to try to gain some quiet.... not so successfully. The front desk gave me ear plugs - what a great crew!
The hostel is in a wonderful area. We spent many hours walking around, enjoying the sights and trying out the local pubs. We felt very safe in the area....never saw anything out of the ordinary. It seemed like a quaint little residential area.
I would definitely recommend this location to anyone on a budget, looking for a hostel close to a tube station...walking distance to small markets and pubs.
great hostel!
I stayed at Palmer's Lodge for 6 nights with my boyfriend and we were very glad that we found this hostel!
Swiss Cottage is quite central (12 min tube trip to Westminster, about the same by bus to Camden Town or Hamstead Heath), the hostel is beautiful, the staff is friendly and ready to help, there is always someone at the reception, no curfew, no huge keys, but magnetic cards to enter your room, what else should one ask for? :-)
A continental breakfast is included, there's also cheap dinner and drinks served in the evenings. You can play board games or nintendo wii, watch tv, read books, surf the internet or play billard in the lobby. You can get towels, toothbrushes or everything else you need at the reception. Internet access is free, you can use a laptop or one of the 6 computers at the hostel. There are lockable boxes and wardrobes in the rooms (bring a padlock for those or buy one at the reception) and also several places to store your luggage before checking in or after checking out.
The lobby is very beautiful, the rooms are simple and convenient, everything was clean, the food is not excellent, but qute alright for the price.
Everything about the hostel is great, the only thing I didn't like was the movement-sensitive lighting in the bathroom that forces you to dance while showering or brushing your teeth.
