Tate Modern

The art of wasting space and time
I am not a fan of Modern art by any stretch of the imagination, but I was interested in seeing some Picasso's and Modigliani's that were supposedly on display. What a huge disappointment, as the articles in this "museum" were for the most part pathetic. I cannot believe the majority of the "works' that were showcased here are considered art. These supposed art pieces are displayed in an enormous building that could have been put to much better use. You could get any three year old to put together a more interesting artistic piece. If traveling to London, save your time (not money as it thankfully is free) and go to the National Gallery to see real works of art created by people with actual talent.
Excellent museum. Audio/multimedia guide well worth it.
I visited Tate Modern for the first time earlier this year and thought it was brilliant. So much so in fact that I decided to become a member which gives free entry to paying exhibitions at all four Tates and access to members' rooms, amongst other things.
It's probably not for people who don't enjoy modern art unless they're prepared to visit with an open mind.
A previous reviewer mentioned that the audio/multimedia guide (which features not only audio but pictures and videos) was difficult to use. I disagree I found it very easy to navigate around and it added to my enjoyment of my visit to the museum enormously.
Worth a visit even if you aren't a fan of modern art
I don't consider myself a fan of modern art so was surprised at how much I enjoyed our visit.
I'd recommend going with other people, so you can discuss what you see and have a bit of a debate about it all, which makes the experience more enjoyable.
We went when 'The Crack' was being exhibited in the main hall and found it all quite strange but thought-provoking (even if your thoughts are 'this is just weird'). Saw some original Chagall, Rothko and Miro works which was fantastic as I love their work. And of course the famous Water Lilies and some Jackson Pollock works.
Well worth a visit - and you can't really complain when it's free! Don't think I would want to pay to visit but its certainly fascinating stuff. and well laid out.
The building is better than the "Art"
Let me preface this by saing I am not an "art" person. That said, we were struck by the beauty of the Tate building and decided to visit. The building is an amazing testament to adaptive reuse. But that's where the good ends. Aside from a few pieces (the Pollack and Worhal were nice), the great majority of this collection is odd at best and some just downright disturbing. Maybe "art" people get it more, but I can throw a rope on the floor - how much will you pay me?
